Basement fix

Our home is 40 years old (3 level split, with crawl space, attached garage, 3 bedrooms).  Over the past six (+/-) years, we have noticed a heaving in the floor which has raised approximately 2 to 3 inches.  The room is approximately 13' x 18' and the builder installed hardwood parque flooring directly on the poured concrete floor.  We have been told by one contractor that the whole floor will have to be removed and he believes that the problem could either be a leak from the drain pipe or tree roots.  We have not gotten an idea of how much this would be to repair.  We were told that it was very important to have repairs done and that it would be expensive.  We are retired and therefore have limited resources.  Any ideas of how much we are looking at?  We plan to get at least several estimates, but have no idea what we should be looking for and how to judge if we are 'getting the straight goods'.

We live in a 50 year old house that has had Spring thaw water problems for a long time . This year a combination of thaw and heavy rain resulted in a major problem in the basement. We called Rod Johnson to have a look at the basement and suggest a solution. Since the walls are concrete  block and the water was seeping through the block at floor level we decided to have the "Interior Drainage System Beneath the Slab" treatment.
Rod's crew (Adam & Jeff) completed the work on time and with very little inconvenience to us. They supplied the drop cloths which kept the debris off of rugs and stairs. A large fan/exhaust system blew the dust outside via a basement window. When the work was completed they cleaned up the work area and we where able to move furniture back the next day.
Adam & Jeff where very easy to work with - they answered our many questions and made suggestions that added to our satisfaction.
